Improvement Work To Begin On The Lower Market Place

Work to revitalise Altrincham’s historic marketplace will begin on Monday 16 September, with the closure of the lower market place, to enable the demolition and clearance of the existing site to get underway.

The redevelopment will see the existing lower market transformed into a modern market place with outdoor seating areas, semi-mature trees planted, and a single, level surface created, to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and, at certain times of day, motorists too.

From Monday 23 September, Central Way will be closed to traffic from the junction with Shaws Road for ten weeks, and diversion signs will be put in place on Market Street.

Councillor Matthew Colledge, Chair of Altrincham Forward and Leader of Trafford Council, said:

“The redevelopment of the lower market place marks a major milestone in our plans to rejuvenate Altrincham town centre.

“We have begun work on site now, with the aim of completing the works to the lower market in time for Christmas.

“Inevitably, as with any project of this type, there will be some disruption, which we will do our best to keep to a minimum, by completing the works in stages, and by keeping both residents and businesses affected by the works, up to date with progress.

“We hope that people will agree when they see the new lower market place that the changes are a welcome improvement for Altrincham, and mark just the beginning of an exciting period of change to come.”
