‘Not Leaving But Arriving’ is the name of a new art exhibition taking place in Altrincham Forward’s offices on Shaws Road until the 20th July.

The exhibition – created by Trafford College students Barbara Garvey, Julie Robertson, Mim Sanders and Andrew Cowen – marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership between Altrincham Forward and Trafford College’s Creative Arts Department.

All four students have recently successfully completed the BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Trafford College and are progressing onto courses at Manchester School of Art, Hot Bed Press and Nottingham Trent University.

Talking about the exhibition, Barbara Garvey said: “The inspiration for my project and my reasons for taking the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Trafford College are inextricably linked – the idea that it is necessary to leave in order to arrive.

“My ambition since being a teenager has been to attend Manchester School of Art. Completing this course has given me the confidence, skills and assurance that this is the right path.

“Now I am leaving – in order to arrive – and fulfill this long-held ambition: a dream come true.”

Speaking about the partnership, Joan Scott, Assistant Principal at Trafford College and Altrincham Forward Board Member said:

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Altrincham Forward to showcase our students’ fantastic work in such a prominent town centre location.”

Councillor Matt Colledge, Chair of Altrincham Forward and Leader of Trafford Council, said: “Not Leaving But Arriving is the second in an ongoing programme of community exhibitions being held in Altrincham Forward’s offices.

“The exhibition underlines our commitment to showcasing the talent that exists in Altrincham. This innovative use is something we could also adopt as a temporary measure to brighten up and generate interest in some of the empty shop units in the town centre.”
