Olympic Torch in Knutsford

Knutsford Olympic Torch relay

The torch is currently making its way around the UK and today has been in our area. Unfortunately Altrincham is not part of the torch relay but neighbouring town, Knutsford, celebrated the Olympic torch passing through this morning.

This summer marks the first time the national Olympics have come to the UK for 64 years and it is likely that many of us will not see the Olympics come back to London in our lifetime.

The spirits weren’t dampened by the rain as hundreds of people turned out to watch the relay with the Olympic torch. Knutsford organised some great events for the local community with a local choir, an Olympic banner competition, a scarecrow display, and even a flash mob on the heath from local Cheshire dance artists.

If you missed out on the Olympic torch relay at Knutsford, you may still catch it at Macclesfield later today or at Buxton on the 29th June.

This weekend is a really good opportunity to see people in the community out and about with the Olympics and the Jubilee towns and communities are coming together for celebrations. Today in Knutsford we noticed the bars, cafes and restaurants were packed with people spending money after watching the torch relay.

If the torch had come to Altrincham this would have been a great boost for the local economy, as it stands we don’t have this as an event to bring people into the town centre but we can still support our local shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. Altrincham has a lot to offer and buying what you would already purchase in the town centre will benefit the whole community.
