Altrincham Forward Gallery

12-14 Shaws Road, Altrincham

From 3 to 22 March 2014

Ten Plus Textiles was formed in 1991 by ten textile artists who had and trained alongside each other at South Trafford College. The artists all studied for four years for their City and Guilds qualification and at the end of the course their tutor suggested they form a group to help them progress their work. Since then the group has grown to sixteen members from throughout the North West.

For the last 23 years the group have been meeting fortnightly at the Jubilee Centre, Bowdon; bringing their work in progress for the rest of the group to assist with ideas, technique and constructive criticism.

Members have developed their own individual styles, using a range of techniques, but all have the common aim of working with fibres and fabric to promote a greater appreciation of contemporary textile art. From fine hand and machine embroidery, patchwork, quilting and beadwork, to weaving, hand-made felt and paper, collage and mixed media, the members create work that demonstrates both the aesthetics of modern design and the unique surface qualities of the decorative stitch. Their work is rich, luxurious and ornate in texture and colour and represents a fusion of traditional textile methods with original and inventive ideas and creations.

As the expertise of the group continues to cover an increasingly wide range of disciplines, the group members feel that this diversity is their strength. What unifies them, however, is a fascination for the language of colour and texture, and the myriad of ways in which these can be used to communicate moods and ideas. Their work includes framed pieces and hangings, three dimensional items, fashion accessories and jewellery.

The group exhibits two or three times a year and was keen to use the Altrincham Forward Gallery as a local exhibition space. Diana Shone, an Altrincham resident and group member, is also keen to help revitalise the town centre. “The Altrincham Forward Gallery is a lovely light place to show our work and encourage others to Sew.”

Members of the group will be here daily throughout the exhibition and are on hand to talk about their work and offer advice on textile art. Open Mon – Sat 10am to 4pm.
