Everyone can benefit from regular exercise, but it is particularly important for the development of children.  Regular activity can help children build stronger muscles and bones, be less likely to become overweight or develop type 2 diabetes, have a better outlook on life, sleep better and be able to handle physical and emotional challenges more easily — from running to catch a bus to studying for a test.

However, the percentage of overweight and obese kids and teenagers has more than doubled in the past 30 years. Although many factors contribute to this epidemic, children are simply becoming more sedentary. The Kaiser Family Foundation claims that 8- to 18-year-olds watch about 4.5 hours of television a day. And the average kid spends 7 hours on all screen media combined!

According to The National Association for Sport and Physical Education Infants and young children should not be inactive for prolonged periods of time — no more than 1 hour unless they’re sleeping. And school-age children should not be inactive for periods longer than 2 hours.

“Parents should encourage their kids to do a variety of activities so that they can work on all three elements of fitness. The more varied the activities the more kids will keep interested in fitness and continue to participate in an active lifestyle” says Nigel Brierley.

So if you want to raise fit and healthy kids you parents should look to combine regular physical activity with a healthy diet is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips for raising fit kids:

  • Help your kids participate in a variety of age-appropriate activities.
  • Establish a regular schedule for physical activity.
  • Incorporate activity into daily routines, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Embrace a healthier lifestyle yourself, so you’ll be a positive role model for your family.
  • Keep it fun, so you can count on your kids to come back for more.

Kid Summer Bootcamps start from 31st July 2012. As children develop new and diverse skills at different ages the groups are split from 6-9’s and 10-13’s to take account of the varying level of skill and attitude towards exercise.

Sessions run Tuesdays 3.30 -5pm for 6-9 year olds and Thursdays 3.30- 5pm for 10-13 year olds at Bowdon Rugby Club. And don’t worry if it is raining we can run the activities indoors! Sessions cost £36 per child for a 6 week period.
