Help Altrincham Thrive – Buy Local

Help Altrincham thrive again

Pitta Crepe, an example of a great local Altrincham businessOne of the best ways to help the Altrincham community is to encourage consumers to buy locally. This could simply be shopping locally for your weekly groceries, or even sourcing a local business to purchase goods/services from rather than doing it online. The support of local people is key to the success of helping Altrincham thrive again. There are so many small businesses in Altrincham and the surrounding areas, it is easy to find some “hidden gems” that perhaps you didn’t even realise were there.

Benefits of buying locally

There is a lot to be said for buying local. I dislike automated services like self service tills at Supermarkets, and I like the face to face sales experience. Having local shops and restaurants where I build a long term rapport with the business is invaluable to me, and encourages the feeling of community. But there’s more to it than that, and here are just a few more benefits:

Altrincham shopping
Price:  A lot of local businesses offer great value, and are often cheaper than bigger chains.  As for matching online prices, once you subtract the costs of P&P there often isn’t really much in it and you get the product straight away rather than having to wait a couple of days for it to arrive.

Going Green:  Without the need for travelling further or ordering online, you save travelling (either yourself or the delivery drivers) as well as packaging. This helps to reduce your carbon footprint.

Quality:  It’s very difficult to beat the quality of a specialised shop over a chain store that offers everything. For example, a local butcher or grocer will offer a much better quality and a much fresher product than say a supermarket. A butcher may also source their products from local farms.

Service and the personal touch:  As mentioned, I really like the personal touch. Dealing directly with the owner of a local business is often much better, and building that long term rapport makes the service and experience that much better.

Local knowledge:  For business owners that have been in Altrincham and the surrounding areas for a long time, they have a lot of local knowledge that can prove useful.

Thriving community: Buying locally improves the feeling of community in the town, and when the community and businesses start to thrive this creates new job opportunities and improves the town.
